Of Defense

Since Mages do have low defense rate (thanks to a different def rate formula), INT-STR would be a good built. Mages need HP (from STR) to accommodate damages from mobs when their defense fails them. DEX should only be up to 30. Mages will rely on their def-rate plus their mana shield for their overall defense. Strategic defense comes in when you use Teleport.

INT is the most important stat as it increases magical damage, resistance and defense.

So for stat allocation, I use the usual 3 INT-2 STR ratio, unless I feel the need to pump STR for more HP.

For this built, I use a Black Dragon set which is good against melee attacks. For now I am not really using Red Dragon and Blue Dragon items. The defense and resistance I get from Ice attacks come from my high INT stats. I can see this when I deal with Orc Shamans since the max damage I get from them is 1.This is true considering that I have a level 1 Ice Mastery.

The defense and resistance mages get from Fire depends on INT and their fire mastery. I am a fire mage so I don’t have problems with this. The only problem I have is on melee attacks, so when the melee damage kicks in, the Black Dragon defense plus high HP plus Mana Shield will be there to more or less lessen the damage. When your HP runs out because of the mobs, Teleport will save you from death.

Of Damage and Attacks

Although I consider myself a Fire Mage, I take some skills from the other two elements to add more versatility in my mage.

When I attack on a single monster, I use my level 9 Firebolt and my level 1 Lightning Bolt in sync. I rapidly press keys assigned to each spell. Believe me, this technique can kill Strong Orc Lords in 1 hit and Im only a level-23 mage using basic mage skills. This allows me to use less mana compared to using Firebolt all the time. Also, this allows me to inflict Burn and Stun successively. This requires a level 1 Lightning Mastery only.

When I deal with mobs in “beads” so to speak, I use either FlameWave or the Ice Spear successively.

I particularly use Ice Pillar for Bosses. With a level 4 Ice pillar and Level 2 Ice Mastery, I have a success rate of 10% in effectively using Ice Pillar. After that I just do the FireBolt-Lightning Bolt thing.
