Special Monsters
There are 3 types of special monster in Travia: the boss monster, the quest monster, and the Demolator.
Bosses are explained in terminology. Bosses can be any type of normal monster. They appear randomly when a normal monster should spawn. Your best chances for finding boss monsters are actually if you kill everything in sight while moving around in a circular pattern. This way, you will both keep moving and be able to locate a boss monster when it appears, and you will cause more boss monsters to spawn as you kill enemies.
Quest monsters are special monsters that only show up as part of a quest. A good example is the Swamp Shadow King, who only appears when you are completing a quest for Amelia in DF. When these monsters show up, only the character who made that monster appear can fight it. Stronger than normal monsters and weaker than bosses, they provide a slight challenge, but are usually easy targets.
A Demolator is an enemy so powerful and rare that it gets its own section. As mentioned in terminology, the demolator has a chance of dropping multiple rares and much tra, but it is also the most powerful enemy in the game, capable of wiping out most chars in one hit. Its level is 110, and the recommended level for even attempting to take one down in 50. Due to the current imbalance in classes, only a mage can expect to stand a chance on his own. Every other char needs to join a party to take one down with much success. The risk is great, but so are the rewards.
